The Basel Graduate School of History (BGSH) is offering two 1-year starter scholarships starting on 1 April 2027. The scholarships aim to support graduates during the initial phase of their doctorate. The selection process follows the guiding principles on diversity and inclusion of the University of Basel, which promotes a family-friendly, equality-oriented, nondiscriminatory and accessible environment.
Tasks
- Prepare a compelling funding application within the first six months of the scholarship.
- Submit the funding application to relevant bodies to continue the dissertation with third-party funding.
Requirements
- Hold a Master's degree or an equivalent qualification in History.
- Interest in research in one of the following areas: Medieval History, Early Modern History, Modern and Contemporary History, Eastern European History, Jewish History, Global History, African History.
- High level of motivation.
- Ability to carry out a research project independently over several years as an active member of the BGSH.
- Contribute to academic debates within and outside the Department of History.
- Applicants must list a member of the BGSH faculty as potential supervisor for their PhD project.
- Applicants who are about to complete their studies can apply, provided they submit an official graduation certificate no later than 9 February 2027.
- Applications from doctoral students already enrolled at other institutions will not be considered.
- Holders of a starter scholarship must enrol as PhD students at the University of Basel.
