This project investigates the human gut microbiota-mediated transformations of arsenobetaine (AsB), the dominant arsenic species in fish and seafood, to assess its toxicological relevance and support FSVO/EFSA in evaluating potential risks associated with AsB-rich seafood.

Tasks

  • Establish robust analytical methods to determine AsB transformation in fecal microbiota, including extraction from samples and method validation for a range of arsenic speciation methods using HPLC-ICP-MS/MS.
  • Develop robust experimental designs.
  • Culture human fecal microbiota from ongoing cohort studies (e.g. BeBiCo on the development of the infant microbiome).
  • Screen AsB transformation in these cultures.
  • Test realistic exposure scenarios and explore microbial determinants.
  • Reporting, paper writing, and scientific presentations.
  • Participate in HPLC-ICP-MS troubleshooting and other laboratory tasks.

Requirements

  • PhD degree in Environmental or Analytical Chemistry or related field.
  • Proven research experience in using hyphenated methods.
  • Independent use of HPLC-ICP-MS to measure trace element species in matrices other than water is required.
  • Experience in arsenic speciation is preferred.
  • Excellent English writing and communication skills.
  • Proven track record of scientific presentations and publications.
  • Strong team orientation.
  • Ability to work in a precise, engaged, and self-organized manner.
  • Commitment to work in an interdisciplinary field with multiple supervisors.
  • Specific experience in statistics and data visualisation, method development and/or troubleshooting in HPLC-ICP-MS, and microbiology incubations is an asset.
